Library Series: Diverse Identities and Inclusion

Updated: Oct 8, 2022

The second meeting in the Library Series, entitled "Diverse Identities and Inclusion," will be held at the Pop-Up Library on October 12th from 6-8PM. This meeting will be a panel style discussion about how we can create a welcoming and inclusive space as we build the Etna Center for Community and Rivertown Library System. The panel will consist of five experts representing both local Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives and the library community. They will be on hand to share how we can build a truly equitable space for everyone in Etna.

The panel will consist of:

  • Jessica Semler (host) - Etna Councilperson, writer, Repro rights advocate, Queer Femme

  • Dena Stanley - Executive Director of TransYOUniting PGH

  • Megan Zagorski - Projects and Partnerships Manager, Allegheny County Library Association

  • Allison Butka - Chairperson of the Etna Human Relations Committee

  • Melissa Rogers - Youth Program Director at the Millvale Community Library

We have a unique opportunity to form both a physical space as well as an institution that recognizes and supports people from all backgrounds, identities, and abilities. It is our goal to engage with the community every step of the way to create a space that has the needs of all residents in mind. We also hope to have a conversation around issues of social equity so that everyone who uses the library understands the importance of shaping the environment and program models so that everyone in the community has equal access, representation, and the support that they need.

The meeting will be held in person and on zoom, and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions or bring up topics of discussion to be considered by the panel. We will, as always, be collecting feedback from the community to inform the development of the Etna Center for Community and the Rivertown Library System and its programming. We hope that you will sign up here to attend, or that you will use this link to sign on virtually to be a part of this important conversation.

Like all of our community meetings, a free meal and chocolate will be provided!

Sign up to attend in person here. Space is limited! Or log on to the virtual meeting using this link.
